Happy belated Valentine to me! My hubby got me a dress form this week to help speed up my sewing, ease my pattern creation (and tweaking!) and motivate me to try sewing something more difficult than a circle skirt (yeah I'm in a rut, but they are so easy!!!). If you have not yet been to Hancock Fabrics, GO! I love them. They are a bit smaller than your super fabric outlet stores, but they are friendly, knowledgeable and have great sales. They also just re-did their website. Long story short, they are amazing. This dress form came from their online site, it is a "Sew Perfect" (mine is a size small... I'm tiny). Currently at $99 and with a $15 off coupon this college family could afford it. It is not of the highest quality and as I've read from many other product reviews, the dials that adjust it will probably fail at some point. Luckily it ships in the smallest position and that's perfect for me. I have 1 more skirt to make (I know I know... shush, only 1 more...) and I plan on making it a more complicated one and using my new dress form. Stay tuned! |

This is the third circle skirt I have made over the past few years of sewing adventures. The first was a black jersey one that was a full circle and hit at the knees. The second was a quarter circle that was made from a red knit that pooled at the floor in a maxi style. Both of these projects taught me something valuable and provided me with learning points for future projects. This flirty mid-thigh, half circle skirt shows just how far I've come. With that said, I still have more to learn. Enjoy! Tutorial
This time I made myself a trinket, a Fox! Last spring I had to put down my 21 year old cat named Fox and I've been eagerly awaiting the time to create this little guy.
Just like the owl for Sammi he is made from felt and friendship floss. There are only differences with this one, I used sequins and beads for the eyes and nose instead of buttons, I used a second piece of felt to create a pocket (to hid the back threads and stuff him) and I got the pattern from a book. Stay tuned for the next trinket... a Tardis! Feeling sleepy and not wanting to sit at my desk and use my sewing machine, I needed a project that I could take to bed with me. Felt trinkets it is. Welcome to the first post of (hopefully) many on a variety of felt trinkets. This first one is for, of course, Sammi. She is the purple Owl princess after all. Per usual there is a linked image on the right that will take you to the original owner's tutorial. I actually didn't realize there was a tutorial when I was creating this so mimicking their steps will NOT get you the out come found on the left. Quick Steps are found below and please note, on this first iteration the back of the owl is a mess of stitching and threads. The next trinket will have a back cover that will hide that mess. Live and Learn, Enjoy!
My latest labor of love for my little brother is a polar fleece pillow. Mine is the larger image on the left and I used the reference image on the right as inspiration.
I measured out the fleece pieces with paper templates and used a vanishing fabric pen to transfer the design to the fabric and then cut out all of of the pieces. After pinning the pieces in places I began the "applique" process by machine sewing the pieces to the yellow fabric. I then matched the outside faces and stitched it closed with a 3" opening left to turn it right side in and stuff it. Using a ladder stitch I closed the seam and ta da! Pillow! |
